Soweto Gospel Choir presented by Virginia Arts Festival! Out of the darkness comes a new dawn! This all-new concert by three-time Grammy®-winning Soweto Gospel Choir commemorates South Africa’s Freedom Movement and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Bringing joy, “HOPE” opens with a rousing program of South African freedom songs that inspired their Rainbow Nation. Then the choir’s uplifting performance moves to the United States with beautiful renditions of the music of the Civil Rights Movement, including works by legendary artists Billie Holiday, James Brown, Otis Redding, Curtis Mayfield and the one-and-only, Aretha Franklin. And just for this December engagement, this rousing concert includes joyful holiday songs for the season. Join the celebration!
“A cornucopia of remarkable voices: sharp, sweet, kindly, raspy and incantatory leads above a magnificently velvety blend. Resplendent in a rainbow of robes and patterned textiles, with group moves for every song, the choir was constantly in motion and rich in harmony.”
