“This is the best show I have literally ever seen.”

Little Theatre of Norfolk’s production of Choir Boy, the story of a young, Black gay man navigating the challenges of an elite prep school, opened to rave reviews this month.

The show tackles difficult topics of identity and allyship but also brings humor and heart to the stage. As the theatre prepared for their upcoming Pride Night on Friday, January 24th, Director Tré Porchia reflected on the production:

“With this show, Choir Boy, I wanted to make sure that ‘being gay’ wasn’t the main focus of the show. Yes, Pharus, the gay choir lead, is whom the show is centered around, but it’s not a story of him figuring it out. He just IS. And so, it’s important to show how it affects his everyday life without it being the main point, which I believe is important. I also thought it important that his best friend, who is a straight man, is the ideal ally. Never treats him differently because of his sexuality, always sticks up for him as a person as a whole, and can joke with him just like he jokes with his sports friends. All of this to normalize everything we see on stage and to turn our attention towards other issues with other characters in the show that each have their own different types of struggles. Showing the audience that there is struggle with EVERYONE, regardless of sexuality, race, beliefs, age, everything. That’s the most important part. And it’s also just nice to have a vitally important modern story starring a gay, Black man”
