Donald Trump’s victory in last week’s US election has sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community, given the president-elect’s divisive rhetoric and demonization of the trans community.

In response, the two area organizations are presenting scheduled two events next week to provide our local transgender community with emotional and practical support.

Presented by the Transgender Assistance Program of Virginia, the 20th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience (TDOR) is scheduled for Wednesday, November 20 at 6:45 on Facebook Live. This year’s theme is Remembering Our Trans Legacy and will honor the lives lost to anti-transgender violence and discrimination, celebrate who we are, and reflect on the loss of our own, Shelby Lexus Walker.

Speakers for the evening are Anjeni Moore, Tona Bowman, and Dexter Davis. Our community will stand united against prejudice. This is the 20th year celebrating TDOR in Hampton Roads.

To address the practical concerns of transgender people, Godfrey-Smith Counseling will present a free virtual event on November 23 at 10 am entitled “What Now? Considerations For Trans Folks in a Second Trump Administration.”

Gender therapist, Larissa Godfrey-Smith, will conduct a virtual 2-hour dive into medical, legal, social, and mental health considerations for gender-diverse adults, youth, and their families as we prepare to enter a second Trump administration.

Discussion will cover practical steps regarding likely gender care bans for youth, steps for legal identity protections, considerations for navigating social and school communities, and mental health needs in a new era of oppression.

This is a free event. Donations are welcome and 100% go toward the Godfrey-Smith Counseling Trans Refugee Fund, providing gender affirming care letters for trans folks that have left their home state after care bans. Register to participate at EventBrite.
