Pride on High Street: Unity and Celebration in Portsmouth, Virginia
Historic downtown Portsmouth is transforming into a kaleidoscope of color, connection, and community joy. The 5th Annual Portsmouth Pride Festival takes over High Street, uniting residents from across Hampton Roads under a powerful and uplifting theme: "Pride belongs to all of us.
Organized by Community of Change, Inc., this free, all-ages celebration has quickly grown into a landmark summer event for the city, blending the historic charm of downtown Portsmouth with a vibrant, forward-looking showcase of LGBTQ+ visibility and solidarity.
A Festival with Heart and Purpose
While Portsmouth Pride is undeniable proof that the community knows how to throw a party, the festival remains deeply rooted in advocacy, healing, and wellness. This year’s event places a special emphasis on mental health resources, offering attendees access to culturally competent healthcare information, support systems, and community-building organizations.
Proceeds and outreach from the festival support critical local groups, including the HER Shelter—which aids victims of domestic violence and housing insecurity—and the LGBT Life Center.
What’s Happening on High Street
From 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, High Street will be bustling with energy, entertainment, and inclusive spaces designed for every member of the family—including the furry ones. Here is what festival-goers can look forward to:
- The Main Stage: A packed lineup of live entertainment, including drag performers, local musicians (featuring the Blac Hoodee Band and Kaediggy 007), and empowering community speakers.
- The "Slay-Ground" Teen Pride Zone: A dedicated, safe, and affirming space specifically designed for LGBTQ+ youth to create art, meet peers, and celebrate freely.
- Street Eats & Local Goods: A diverse collection of food trucks, artisan creators, and small businesses showcasing the best of Portsmouth’s local flavor.
- Sip and Stroll: Thanks to Portsmouth's Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), adult festival-goers can enjoy a beverage while wandering through the historic streets and taking in the sights.
More Than Just a Day
For Portsmouth, this festival represents a commitment to being a city where people of all identities can safely live, work, and thrive. By keeping the event completely free and highly accessible, organizers continue to break down barriers, proving that acceptance and pride truly belong to everyone in the community.
Whether you are there for the music, the local vendors, or simply to stand in solidarity with friends and neighbors, Portsmouth Pride delivers a beautiful reminder of the power of love and inclusion.
