Southern Stages: Queer Theater in the American South

June 25, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Not every theatre queen moves to New York. A lot of them stay here in the South, determined to make their home in their region. Determined to claim their Southerness and make the region better.

We do things a little differently down here, and about every 10 years or so Southerners have to remind the national LGBTQ+ organizations that we are here and we have a culture. Theatre is one of the most important sites of cultural transmission, but when you say “southern queer theatre” to most people they can’t think of anyone after Tennessee Williams.

There is no Tennessee Williams in this presentation. This presentation examines work that is “by us, about us, for us” from the last 45 years. The plays in this presentation encompass the range of LGBTQ experience from AIDS to xenophobia and show us some of the rich culture that we southerners have created on our stages.

Presented by Professor Jay Watkins of William and Mary.
