Virginia Queer Film Festival Presents “The Times of Harvey Milk” Free Screening

May 22 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us for a special  screening of “The Times of Harvey Milk,” the 1984 Oscar winning documentary about the life and death of San Francisco’s legendary outspoken queer activist and the latest offering in the Virginia Queer Film Festival’s queer film series.

The film documents the political career of Harvey Milk, San Francisco’s first openly gay supervisor. The film follows Milk’s rise from a neighborhood activist to a symbol of gay political achievement, through to his assassination in November 1978 at San Francisco’s city hall, and the Dan White trial and aftermath.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1985, and was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the first Sundance Film Festival, among other awards.

In 2012, this film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

If you’ve never seen this documentary–and even if you have–there’s no better time than now to explore Milk’s story, when our political environment is just as–if not more–hazardous for the queer community. In 2025, it is required viewing for not only our community, but for the world.

Light snacks and beverages provided. Free admission with donations to the Film Festival appreciated.
