It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Kim Keene, a beloved artist, humanitarian, and beacon of light, on September 16, 2024 at the age of 55. Her boundless creativity and compassion left an indelible mark on the world.

Born in 1969, Kim found her passion for art at an early age. Her unique vision and talent allowed her to paint not only on canvas but also in the hearts of those around her.

Yet, her artistic talent was only a part of her legacy. Kim Keene was the founder of The Starving Artist Cafe and Paint Pink Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local cancer fighters. Through this initiative, she used her art to bring hope and comfort to those battling cancer, offering resources, emotional support, and moments of joy amidst difficult times. She poured her heart into helping others, providing light in the darkest of times.

Her smile was known by all as a bright light, capable of lifting spirits and warming the souls of those fortunate enough to encounter it. Kim had an extraordinary gift for making everyone around her feel seen, heard, and loved.

Kim Keene is survived by her loving partner, Nicole Carry and her two sons, Reed and Kurt Woods. She is also survived by her mother, June Holt Keene, her sister, Kathy Keene, and her beloved niece, Elle Smith. Kim was preceded in death by her father, Al Keene and her grandparents, Brenda and Frank Holt, Mary Allen and James Ovid Keene. She is also mourned by her grandmother Janet Keene, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom will deeply miss her presence. She attended Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and later Greensboro College then Virginia Wesleyan where she was known for her talent on the basketball court.

Though her presence will be deeply missed, her light will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched.

Kim’s Celebration of Life will be held on October 1, 2024 from 11am-2pm at Elation Brewing (5104 Colley Ave, Norfolk). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Kim’s Krusade for Paint Pink to continue her legacy of helping others.

Rest in peace, Kim Keene. Your light, your art, and your spirit will forever be with us.
